Page Count - SEO Site Architecture Question

I have an page-count-seo-site-architecture question. My page count in google seems to have dropped from a high of 270 in mid March down to around 235 pages today.

1. Does it matter? Does more pages mean better search engine positioning?

2. Could it be because I've changed by site map structure. I used to list all my pages in the sitemap but it was confusing to my human users. So I have a short site map which links to an exhaustive siteindex. Is this a good idea? Is there a better way of accomplishing the same thing?

3. Is there any simple way of finding out which pages used to be there?

Help Wanted - Education Site - SEO help

These are open projects that I would like some expert or low-cost help with. The site is about home schooling and enrichment.

1. Site architecture. Here I would pay good money for someone who could convince me that they understand how to improve my internal link structure including helping me with whether and how I should set up a google map.

2. Links. I always want more links. Important relevant deep links. If they bring traffic, great. But my experience is that links help the search engines which bring traffics. If there is someone else doing related non-competitive work (perhaps for online colleges), we could share the costs and benefits of building out some sites.

3. Best use of parked domains. I have many many domains. More than I should. I have dozens (not hundreds - I've met people with hundreds. Buying domains is a little like gambling or other bad habbits). One question I have is how to best deploy these domains from an SEO or revenue point of view?
- How many new sites should I create with a few articles and some adsense ads? If they are hosted at different sites, do they count?
- Or is it better to have multiple domains pointing or redirecting (does it matter) to another domain?
- Can I deeply embed one domain into another?
- Is putting blogs onto them the best way?
Any takers on helping me sort thru this both conceptually and logistically?

Online Marketing Agencies - Ft Lauderdale Boca Raton

A number of people have asked me how to find out more about online marketing and about local vendors (Ft Lauderdale and Boca) that can help them. Heres a few starting points (tell them that I sent you) :

SFIMA - Meets once monthly, Thursday night, in Los Olas around a speaker in online marketing. Very well organized. Online Marketing focus. South Florida Interactive Marketing Association - Welcome to SFIMA

Florida Direct Marketing Association - Meets usually at lunch at the Westin Hotel around a speaker. Focus is direct marketing, more on traditional mail and catalogs than technology but there is overlap.

There are also venture capital, start-up, and technology oriented groups but it's been a few yeas since I have participated.

Local online marketing vendors? I'd mention two in a positive way:

Ten Golden Rules - Smaller multiskilled organization. Broad set of skills (and a great public speaker about online marketing). Based in Boca.

MoreVisibility - Larger organization (several dozen) mostly focused on search engine marketing.
Again, tell them that I sent you.

Blog thoughts for beginners

Starting any blog on any subject is a great start. So is clearing up a few hours to work on it on a regular basis. You can think alot about blogs but since it takes no money and less than an hour to get started, this is an obvious place that the best way to learn is to do.

Here is my 2 cents on blogging ....

1. Blogging is a mix of writing and socializing. There are no keys to success that work for everybody. In fact, there are no measures of success common to everybody. In one of my cases, my goals for a blog tend to evolve faster than the blog. For instance, I started one blog as a simple way to keep track of my unanswered marketing questions and to record what I had learned. A simple business journal. Another was a place where I kept my rough draft of new newsletters or web pages (kids online learning fun). Both are evolving into places where people come to comment. I'm pleased.

2, Like most activities, there are some basics to learn. Three examples: Brevity, linking, networking, and promotion.,

2a - Brevity. Everyone seems to prefer short tight entries with links to related topics. This type of writing takes a little time. Also, bolded headlines. Integrating pictures is nice too.

2b - Links. Linking with the right text to the right place takes a little technique.

2c - Networking. A social skill. Most blogs are part of a group of blogs, a blog-crowd, -cloud, or -sphere. This allows you to comment and link back and forth to other people. A type of conversation. Finding people who complement and will work with you can be tricky. These relationships are also immensely interesting and fruitful. Lastly , promotion. This means that the blog can actually be a tool to promote and idea of to sell a product. Also, getting the blog rated and popular requires clever promotion and the right types of links. You can aspire to getting traffic only from links or also from search engines. If you want search engine traffic, you need to think about keyphrases. If its all links, you need to pick your link-partners, web rinks, ad-exchanges etc judiciously. There are plenty of articles and books. Try for instance, this blog overview.

3. Blogging can evolve into a business, become a support tool for another business or mission, or become a way of socializing or introspection. Of course, while a blog is good for support, often a forum is better. See the new online learning parents forum.

4. Most bloggers start by trying to write alot and by reading alot of others blogs. Then, they get rid of their blog and start again. Sometimes, they do this frequently. Often, they constantly consider redoing their blog but feel that they have gone too far to turn back now. No advice here other than almost everyone is always contemplating restarting or not.

5. Don't worry at first about the look. You can spend alot of time worrying about the graphics and structure or, you can get to the point which is to start posting. Once you are started, you will probably have a much better idea on what look, what layout and what imagery you want. You might even find a friend online who will put it together for you. So don't start by hiring a graphic artist to design it or a programmer to structure it. You can figure these things out later.

6. Traffic building - Blogging is also a great way to build position in the search engines. Its been suggested that B-L-O-G is not so much an abbreviation for Web-Log but the secret to a Better Listing On Google. Each blog update is, depending on your settings, automatically entered into the search engines (pinging the engines is usually an automated function with each new article). So a frequently updated blog gets alot of search engine attention and can both pull traffic (if keyworded properly and with some link popularity) and help create page rank for sites it links to. I think this effect will soon diminish since so many people are using it but the impact of blogs on your position in google is so far is striking, google seems to treat them as news sites and give them special attention.

SEO Progress

I have a hierarchy of words that I aspire to place well on. Here, for instance, in the homeschool arena, is a progress report. I'm measuring my place in google on words pulled from Yahoo's data on the number of searches conducted on their engine in Feb 06:

home school -143,598 searches- 64th on google for homeschool, not in top 100 for home school
home school curriculum - 22,530 - 21st on google (for homeschool curriculum)
christian home school - 8,747
home school resource - 6,104 - 90th
online home school - 4,182 - 7th for homeschool online, 12th for online homeschool, not placing with home school spelling
home school program - 3,764 - 100th on google
home school worksheets - 3,385 - 67th on google
high school diploma at home - 2,752 - not interested
home school material - 2,449 - 55th on google for homeschool material
home school driver ed - 2,448 - not interested

I tend to focus on my results on google. As recently as Oct 2005, I was not in the top 100 for any of these terms. However, as last check, I was front page on google for one variation of online home school, under 100 on homeschool program homeschol resource, homeschool material, and homeschool resource. And had just broken the top 100 for homeschool.

What does "one variation mean?" Well, google treats these searches differently: online homeschool (I'm number 7 here today) , online home school (not in top 100), homeschool online (number 12), and home school online (not in top 100).

The different semantic handling of home school versus homeschool and the order is perplexing to me but not an area of great interest. I imagine google and yahoo have a number of rapidly evolving approaches to dealing with these semantic questions.

It's interesting how steady my progress has been over the past 6 months with my site creeping up on a weekly basis.

With more links and page tweeks, I would expect to get on the front page for almost of all these terms by the summer with the exception of homeschool itself.

To be honest, I'm not all that sure where all these links are coming from. I have placed some advertisments staying focused on text advertisements with direct searchable links where they let me choose the anchor text. For instance:

Using Keywords and Keyphrases

People typically find most sites through a search on a word or phrase such as: "learning math online" or "kids learning games". The heart of online PPC and search engine marketing is finding the keywords and keyphrases that work for you.

Generally, from a webmaster's point of view, a single word keyword producces a large volume search with less targetted traffic. A multiword keyphrase produces more targetted traffic which is less competitive or expensive to win. For an extreme example, my site does better to focus on "third grade learning games" than to compete for the word games. Lets analyse the keyword "games".

If you look up the search volume on games, you'll find that yahoo has 4 million searches for the word "games" in January. The largest two word keyphrase with the word game was "free game" at 1.4M. Since my site is for learning, its unlikely that most of the people interested in "games" would have much interest in my site (its also unlikely that at this stage that I could compete successfully for these very high volume phrases. Looking down the list, the first expression that might produce traffic targetted at my site is "kids learning games" which has 10K seaches in January. If you look up "third grade learning games", you'll find 56 searches in January.

Now keyphrases can be used in a few ways. You can design a page to do well in the search engines for a keyphrase by using it in the (listed roughly in order of impact) Page URL, page name, body text, H1 or H2 tags, anchor text pointing to that page, meta tags and meta descriptions, and alt tags. (Theres alot more to it than just the onpage issues). You can also buy traffic based on people searching on keyphrases thru PPC advertising.

Comment on synonym engine by google

Although google appears intelligent, its actual "thinking" is primarily based on keyword and keyphrase analysis. Comment on semantic stupidity (doesn't think of 3rd and third as the same)
